Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries Series 3 Costume Exhibition at Rippon Lea Estate

It’s the post (some of) you have been waiting for! (Please don’t get freaked out by the word count; it’s largely from the photo captions.)

This one’s for all the people who like looking at my photos from my previous Miss Fisher’s costume exhibition post. (And for any lady looking for gorgeous, fashionable, and sassy costume ideas for a 1920’s party and who doesn’t just want to go as a flapper.)

For the rest of my patient followers, I’m sorry if this one bores you to tears. I hope you’re Miss Fisher fans, too?

I bought our tickets prior to the exhibition opening in May, and have only just gotten around to going! Shame on me. Luckily it turned out to be a lovely day to visit. The driveway up to the Rippon Lea mansion was bursting with colour and looked more attractive than ever!

Good thing we had prepaid tickets – even though there wasn’t (at this point) a queue out the door, the staff were telling other visitor arriving behind us that they had to wait before being admitted if they hadn’t purchased their tickets online. But there was a cafe set up in the old stables around the corner, so I guess waiting there was nicer than standing around out the front.

After we heard the usual “Don’t touch the costumes. No flash photography.” speech, we were let loose to wander and sigh over Marion Boyce’s creations to our hearts content. And there was a lot of ooh-ing and aah-ing going on.

I started in the conservatory, where the tennis outfits from Episode 7 “Game, Set & Murder” were displayed.

And there, in the final room for the day, was a display of a selection of Phryne’s accessories, from the private collection of Marion Boyce.

Somewhat mind-blowing to think this was just a selection of Phryne’s accessories. Imagine how much more there is!

If you are a fan of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries (#MFMM) and have a chance to see the costume exhibition – hopefully they take it on tour, like last time – I think it’s well worth it, and our tickets were not expensive at $20 each. If it doesn’t tour to your part of the world, I hope my post has brought you some satisfaction.

If you haven’t seen my other posts on the previous MFMM costume exhibition or Rippon Lea Estate, why not take a moment to check them out now? I’ve also posted about the (rather smaller) Doctor Blake costume exhibition that was on display in Ballarat last June (2014).

  1. Oh My Goodness. Is this Deja Vous, or have I mentioned Miss Fisher in my previous comments to you?
I thought I was saving my Piece de Theatre of The Winter Solstice being in June in your part of the world, until it happens here, yet again. But that didn’t half make me sit up. Who’d a thought it.

I caught the whole series late so had a lovely time watching it all hour after hour for days on end.
Will there be any more, do you think?

    Thanks for the wonderful photos.

    • I think you may have mentioned it previously, Elena. But I get a lot of views on my last post, mostly from people on Pinterest, I think.
I’ve re-watched the last series after visiting the exhibition last weekend – it’s fun spotting the costumes I saw on display. And it’s fun just re-watching the series for the enjoyment of it all.
I’d heard they’re doing a MFMM movie, being filmed in England… but I’ve also heard that Essie is involved with Game of Thrones, so…? It’s only what I’ve heard. I don’t seek out these snippets, so I’ve no idea how accurate they are, or have any further details.
Glad you enjoyed the photos. 🙂

  2. Hi Dayna,

Did you design a costume for Miss Phryne Fisher? Or were you too busy being gob-smacked?

    Clare

    • Hi Clare,
No, I am no fashion designer! I just enjoy seeing them – and when required (I used to) enjoy making costumes; from a pattern, I hasten to add! 🙂

  3. Hi Dayna,
I haven’t had a chance to see the series yet so that will be something to look forward to! However, I love all the pictures you’ve shared. It was such a stylish time for fashion I think and I’d love to play dress-ups with those costumes. I’m a bit old fashioned in my tastes. I also loved the Agatha Christie series of books and enjoyed looking at the fashions when the ABC aired the Poirot series of the stories. Thanks for sharing these. I’m glad you had a great time! I can feel your excitement. Perhaps we’ll see a tv series about Dayna’s Brompton Mysteries one day… 😀

    • Goodness Jane, what a thought! The closest I’m ever likely to come is a part time movie critic, instead of simply telling Stephen what’s wrong with what we’re watching (as we’re watching it! – and driving Stephen up the wall.)
No, thanks for the idea, but I’ll have to stick to my day job for now. 😉

      • I thought that Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries were utterly boring and so predictable, and at the same time riveting. I loved every minute. Bring on another series.

I know so little about Australia, beyond Neville Shute, but Australia has ever consumed my mind. It was always the place in which I wanted to be. But I doubt that it would have been that simple.

I did have a couple of ancestors carted away for sheep stealing, by the name of Mitchell. But then The Mitchells ever were bandits. And so sometimes it gets a bit emotive.

I only ever see the wide blue yonder. The vast plains that might have been mine. There is no such thing in England, and never has been.

But don’t mind me. I get my pleasure from thinking of what might have been.

      • Everyone needs a dream, Elana. I hope you can at least visit one day. 😊

  4. Wow! This is gorgeous. It looks like you had a lot of fun there Dayna. Great photos!

I agree with Jane… The Brompton Mysteries does have a certain ring to it 😉

  5. Sumptuous! Thanks Dayna for bringing us these amazing costumes. I do enjoy Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries but have been a bit disappointed that her chinese lover (who appears in some of the books) only made it to one episode I think. Cheers, Paula

    • Hi Paula,
Yes, the TV series definitely took a different plot line. Li may have been too risqué? Especially as they’ve decided to get Jack and Phryne together.
Still, it’s a very enjoyable show.
Glad you enjoyed the post 😊

  6. Thank you so much for posting this. I have just recently discovered Miss Fisher and love this display of her clothes

    • Thanks Donna, I’m glad you enjoyed my photos. I hope you get to see an exhibition one day.
Did you see that Every Cloud Productions posted on Facebook the other day that they’re selling catalogues of the two costume exhibitions? 😃

  7. Hello! I run a Miss Fisher Costume blog over at phrynefishersfrocks.tumblr.com and I just want to say THANK YOU for your amazing and incredibly detailed photos!! They’ve been invaluable to me as I’ve been researching, especially the plaques with the information! Thank you so much again!!

    • Hi!
I’m glad you found them helpful; I certainly had an enjoyable day out seeing the exhibition and taking photos of the costumes.
      Best regards,
      Dayna
